You do not know what that means, exactly, but you know 34 is worse. And now you are slightly on edge about the number, which is a genuinely funny way to lower it further.

Here is what it actually measures, what the research supports, and the specific ways this metric gets misused.


What the Number Is Measuring

Your heart does not beat at a fixed interval. The gaps between beats vary slightly, beat to beat, and that variation is what HRV captures.

The variation comes largely from the vagus nerve applying and releasing a brake. When you are safe and recovered, the brake is active and the intervals vary more. Under threat, effort, or stress, the brake releases so your heart can respond quickly, and the intervals become more uniform.

So HRV is not a measure of fitness or of how hard your heart is working. It is closer to a readout of how much regulatory capacity is currently online, which is exactly what you draw on when you need to not say the thing.

There is also a body of work linking low resting HRV with hostility and with a tendency toward anger, though these are associations across groups rather than predictions about individuals.

Two honest caveats belong here. Most of this is correlational, so low HRV does not cause anger. And the effect sizes are modest, meaning HRV is one useful signal among many rather than a measurement of your character.

The One Thing You Can Do About It

Slow breathing at roughly six breaths per minute produces a large, immediate rise in HRV. This is not a subtle effect. It happens because breathing at that rate resonates with the natural rhythm of your blood pressure regulation, so heart rate swings widely in sync with the breath.

Paul Lehrer and Evgeny Vaschillo built HRV biofeedback around this, training people to find their individual resonance rate and breathe there for around twenty minutes a day. It has been studied for anxiety, stress, and performance, with generally positive though variable results.

Two clarifications worth having. During the exercise your HRV rises dramatically, and that is a state change rather than a trait change. If you want your resting HRV to trend upward over months, the levers are unglamorous and well supported.

Sleep is the largest single one, in both quantity and regularity. Alcohol has a pronounced suppressing effect that persists into the following night, which is easy to see in your own data and often the most persuasive thing a wearable ever shows anyone. Regular aerobic exercise raises it over time, while overtraining lowers it. And chronic psychological stress suppresses it for as long as the stress lasts.

None of that is news, which is the point. HRV is not a shortcut past the boring inputs. Its actual value is making the boring inputs visible, so the cost of a late night stops being an abstraction.


How to Use It Without It Using You

Look at your trend weekly rather than your number daily. Use it to notice when your capacity is genuinely low, and treat that as information for planning rather than a verdict: a low week is a week to move the difficult conversation, not a week to be disappointed in yourself.

And if you find yourself checking it before you have got out of bed, checking your mood against it, or feeling worse after looking, the honest move is to turn the notification off. The metric is meant to tell you when your brake is thin. It is not meant to become another thing you can fail at.
